Ellen DeGeneres and longtime girlfriend Portia de Rossi are jumping at the chance to get married. DeGeneres announced their engagement during a Thursday taping of "The Ellen DeGeneres Show," telling the studio audience the news that the California Supreme Court had struck down state laws against gay marriage.

"So I would like to say now, for the first time, I am announcing: I am getting married," she said during the show, airing Friday.

The studio audience leapt to its feet for a long ovation, and De Rossi ("Ally McBeal," "Nip/Tuck") was sitting in the audience, beaming and clapping.

Then DeGeneres cracked: "Thank you. I'll tell you who the lucky guy is soon."

The court ruling means same-sex couples could tie the knot in as little as a month. However, religious and social conservatives are seeking to put a constitutional amendment on the ballot in November that would undo the Supreme Court ruling and ban gay marriage.

DeGeneres, 50, has boldly used TV before to make a stand for gay rights.

In 1997, she brought her character on the ABC sitcom "Ellen" out of the closet, making the show the first on prime-time network TV to have an openly gay lead. The move drew cheers from gay civil rights organizations but was condemned by some religious groups.

A month before, DeGeneres had proclaimed from the cover of Time magazine that she was a lesbian.

DeGeneres, 50, and the glamorous de Rossi, 35, have been a familiar couple at Hollywood events, including the Academy Awards. Previously, DeGeneres had a high-profile relationship with actress Anne Heche. Continued...

makes a valid point to SOME degree, but if Jesus was at that gay parade, He would certainly tell them to "GO AND SIN NO MORE, GO AND SIN NO MORE"...that's the key isn't it? It is NOT "hate" for Christians to take a stand on issues that are immoral or just plain wrong. There was someone in our remote history who once said that "freedom without responsibility is chaos". This society needs to realize one other thing the Lord said also. "You reap what you sow". Do not be surprised then about aids spreading or others dying because of it. It is the homosexual lifestyle, among other sources, that initiates the disease.

What makes you "gay" people think your lifestyle should POTENTIALLY have the right to infect all mankind, and that the mass majority of people should suffer because of your choices? You are certainly free in this COUNTRY to choose as you please on many issues, BUT SO AM I! Your lifestyle is contrary to nature and the Lord's instructions for a happier life. The majority of people in this country DO NOT want your agenda and lifestyle propagated on them or society in general.

You have the same rights as an American citizen as I do. What I OBJECT to is the seeking out of any SPECIAL rights because of your "gayness". The fact that this type of lifestyle can be promoted and exposed to millions of viewers through mass media by "celebrities" is indicative of the continual decline of morality this nation is experiencing. I agree with post #16, by BIG, who says that "God is not mocked", and the San Andreas could start plate movement at any time.

DeGeneres
Ellen may feel "lucky" that she has money and a young girl friend, but she will never be able to say she is "blessed" until she gives up her lifestyle which is an abomination in God's sight. She is "doing well" only because Satan has her in a vice right now.
