Corzine is Out (and Still Speeding?)
Posted by: Mary Katharine Ham at 4:48 PM
Good news is, John Corzine is recovering from the horrific injuries he received as a result of crash in his motorcade car, at 91 mph, without a seatbelt, on the N.J. highway.

He looked surprisingly good, I thought, coming out of the hospital. That would seem to bode well for his future health, and thank goodness. It was quite an accident.

But, after giving an emotional statement about making it up to the state, Corzine took off in a motorcade that traveled 70 in a 55 during the ride home.

Yeah, sticking with the speed limit would have been advisable for his political health if not for his bodily health. Sheesh.

More Reasons to Love Frank Miller
Posted by: Mary Katharine Ham at 10:38 AM
In addition to the casting for "300," of course:

"These terrorists are worse than any villain I can come up with, and I think it's ridiculous that people in entertainment are not showing what we are up against here…. This is pure propaganda, a throwback, there's no bones about it."

Miller also said he relishes a backlash. "I'm ready," he said, "for my fatwa."

Tenet Said Saddam Would Have Nukes by '07-'09
Posted by: Mary Katharine Ham at 10:07 AM
Lorie Byrd:

The fact that some in the intelligence community believed Saddam was a loveable little fuzzball, does not make it okay for the President to ignore those in the intelligence community who believed (as Tenet said in the 60 Minutes interview) that he would have nukes today.

McCain Conference Call
Posted by: Mary Katharine Ham at 5:07 PM
McCain, learning the ways of the blogger, hardly even gave an opening statement before letting everyone open up with questions:

"Health care seems to be, probably, one of the first two or three questions."
"Obviously, there's a whole lot of conversation about the war in Iraq."
"People are generally very welcoming in the townhall meetings."
Jennifer Rubin: Do you agree with Romney's recent statement about bin Laden?

"Usually, I don't comment on other comments, but bin Laden is a national security issue...There are recent reports that he has some operational control of al Qaeda in Iraq."

"He continues to be a symbl of..the ideological struggle."

"I take the position that the Israelis do-- anyone who inflicts damage or harm or injury on the United States of America...one thing they can be sure of -- we wil get them."

"I think it displays a certain degree of naivete (to say that bin Laden is inconsequential)."

"This is a national security issue."
Philip Klein: When does current funding run out,  and when should the supplemental kick in. When does the Pentagon run out of accounting gimmicks to keep the money flowing?

"Talking with people in the Pentagon, the absolute drop-dead time would be sometime early in June, but they have got to make plans."

"You've got to plan ahead. You'e got to have reassurance...In order to gve the men and women who are serving...the maximum capability to do their jobs."

"Every day that goes by that there's a degree of uncertainty. a feeling of not total support for the men and women serving in the military, cannot be helpful-- in a variety of ways."

"Right now, we need to move forward."

"I'd make the pork barrell projects famous and I'd make their owners famous."

"It's a practice that's got to stop and it's obscene and it's corrupting."

Ryan Sager: Romney and Rudy both put statements out saying they're against the civil unions bill in N.H. Your statement said it's up to the states how to handle civil unions. Could you elaborate on your personal feelings about it, and whether you would support such legislation.

"I am opposed to that legislation. I understand that my statement made clear that I'm a federalist."

"If I were a citizen of N.H., I'd oppose it. Anything that impacts the sanctity of marriage between one man and one woman, I'm opposed to."

I did not catch who posed this question: Michael Ware said recently, we have an obligation to stay in Iraq. Are you seeing a shift in the way the press is handling this story?

"I did not hear his statement, but I'm certainly pleased, maybe for the first time."

"Suicide bombers are continuing to be the focus of their efforts...but there continues to be progress."

"Diyala province is getting hotter and hotter becauset they've been driven out of Baghdad."

"The thing, frankly, that concerns me...is the Maliki government...they have got to act and they've got to act on revenue sharing and deBaathification."

"They've got to prove that they are an inclusive government and not a sectarian government."

"Petraeus becomes more and more concerned with the importation of those suicice d bombers from both Iran and Syria.."

"Measured but small progress taking place."

"The Maliki government is gonna have to step up to the plate."

HamNation: I Do Not Like to Hear Good News
Posted by: Mary Katharine Ham at 1:09 PM

Harry Reid said this week that, if Gen. Petraeus reported progress in Iraq, he would just choose not to believe him. Pesty victory problem solved.

When he said that, he reminded me of the guy in "Green Eggs and Ham." So, today, a poetry reading in the style of "Green Eggs and Ham," with Petraeus as General Fooz (because nothing rhymes with Petraeus), and Harry Reid as that grumpy old guy.

Thanks to my mom for the fabulous voiceover! (And, to my dad, for staying up late to record it.) Update: Oops, and thanks, as always, to Katie Favazza. And, to Emily Dunham and Christie Grennes for handing me lots of sheets of paper very quickly. Well done, ladies!

Update: I also make a surprise appearance in Michelle's year-end Hot Air wrap-up. Why? Because as bad as I am at Dance Dance Revolution, I made the blooper reel. Ha. Enjoy, along with some of your favorite Michelle performances.

Update: More video! The Friday Freefly is up, and it's about whether the Defeatist Dems will ever push Lieberman over the edge.

Countdown to the Veto Begins
Posted by: Mary Katharine Ham at 3:33 PM

Senate approves war spending bill.

Liebs hit a homer on the floor, from what I've read so far:

YOU CAN'T HAVE IT BOTH WAYS. YOU CAN'T WITHDRAW COMBATTROOPS FROM IRAQ AND STILL SAY YOU'RE GOING TO FIGHT AL QAEDA THERE. IFYOU BELIEVE THAT THERE IS NO HOPE OF WINNING IN IRAQ OR THAT THE COSTSOF VICTORY THERE ARE NOT WORTH IT, THEN YOU SHOULD BE FOR COMPLETEWITHDRAWAL AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.

Only In Poiltics Can This Be Considered News
Posted by: Mary Katharine Ham at 12:17 PM
McCain is running for president!

In other news, the rate of acceleration is 9.8 meters per second, and Bill Clinton likes to chase the occasional skirt.

Extra! Extra!

Also, McCain is recycling his snappy put-downs. Green, I guess, but not cool. Come on, John, you're funnier than that.

Hello from Philly
Posted by: Mary Katharine Ham at 12:17 PM
I'm in Philly at a lovely hotel in a lovely ballroom for the Heritage Foundation's Resource Bank, an annual event during which a bunch of conservative think-tank wonks get together to talk, strategize, and drink for a couple days. It's the 30th Annual Resource Bank, and there are hundreds of activists here. That's right, the vast right-wing conspiracy has been around that long.

I'll be taking pictures, writing about the discussions, and maybe video-taping some of the speakers while I'm here. The Global Warming roundtable oughtta be interesting.  I may also be trying to sneak away for a second to see King Tut, who's also in town right now. Sweet. I hear he's "buried in his jammies."

More in a bit.
