Who won Tuesday's presidential debate?

Almost as upsetting as the fact that the United States is engaged in a long-term global war against radical Islamists is that a shocking percentage of people seem predisposed against grasping it.

To the perennially oblivious, we are in a war of choice in Iraq, which, among other "elective" actions, is stoking extremism and provoking retaliatory action against us. If we will just cease and desist these actions and otherwise alter those policies giving rise to grievances among radical Muslims, their rage will subside and they'll quit targeting us for extinction.

Those afflicted with this line of thinking not only believe it is our actions and policies that cause terrorists to hate us, but that many of those actions and policies are indeed objectionable.

That is, many of those who think global jihadists can be pacified uncoincidentally also believe they have legitimate complaints against the United States.

To these critics, America is not a shining city on a hill, not a beacon of freedom, not an exemplar of civil liberties, but, under the evil Bush administration at least, a nation that intermeddles in other nations' civil wars and ethnic disputes, systematically abuses and tortures enemy prisoners, spies on its own innocent citizens, runs roughshod over other nations in dictating its will on the international stage and is inhospitable to illegal immigrants.

The critics are projecting their own complaints about the United States on to the jihadists and choosing to believe, despite the overwhelming weight of the evidence and all common sense, that our enemy can be mollified if we'll just quit being a greedy, imperialistic superpower that seeks to impose its will and values on other peoples and exploit their resources.

Of course, these blame-America-firsters are wrong on their complaints against this country. But they are just as wrong about the appeasability of Muslim terrorists.

The terrorists don't just hate us for certain policies we pursue, such as our "occupation" of Saudi Arabia, our alliance with Israel or our stubborn refusal to withdraw from Iraq's "civil war." They hate us because of who we are and what we represent. We could adopt every America-denigrating policy our domestic critics recommend and we'd not make a dent in the enemy's hatred for us.

We can't afford to perpetuate this self-destructive denial of the threat that is right in front of our faces. Our national survival depends on our awareness that short of our national conversion to radical Islam, we are destined for a long-term war against the jihadists. Continued...

Your comment about Realpolitik (last paragraph) affecting "real people on the ground" shows the problem in trying to mix Morality and Politics. is correct. I was trying to explain a common justification rather than justify it. I did not intend to portray them as historical mistakes but rather a common condition of life. This Basic Problem also exists in Philosophy; for example, consider Jeremy Bentham's(sp?) 19th century idea of the "Greatest Good for the Greatest Number (of people)". Since Real Life is NOT equal or fair, someone always loses in natural life (diseases, abilities, longvity, etc.)as well as economic and political life. etc.) A good example of this in TV dramas was an episode of West Wing in which Pres. Bartlet agonized over the coming death of one custodian in a Libyan building upon which he had ordered a bombing attack by US planes. The justification which Pres. Bartlet used was Bentham's. Another common situation is some govt official deciding what are Acceptable Losses (of innocent lives) in emergency situations (like terrorist hijackings of airplanes). A satiric twist on this tendency was the scene in Die Hard 2 where federal police (veterans of Saigon) talked about acceptable number of innocent casualties before their "attack run" on the bldg in a heliocopter. When the police heliocopter was destroyed, it was a situation of Poetic Justice: officials who were willing to kill innocent citizens were instead killed.
Philosophical Idea has become a part of modern morality and decision making. Problem is that some people who lose (their lives) are NOT guilty or responsible.
The problem remains: some people lose their lives because of the decisions and actions of other people. How can innocent people be protected from criminals, terrorists, juries, judges, military, own govt and police officials, etc?.

re: K at 12:40 (continued)
You do have a valid point about hypocrites everywhere, and the treatment of Blacks in the USA until the 1960's. However although you did not directly mention it, racial and ethnic discrimination cut across all races and ethnic groups. Attempts to portray only Whites as racists is a symptom of this disease. Your division of America into 2 parts seems valid: racists and non-racists. An interesting point here is the minority Race Baiters and Con Men (Sharpton et al) who often jump into situations for their personal aggrandizement and make the situation worse by Lying accusations (ex: Tawana Brawley case). Also, often White Liberals seek to clear their "guilty consciences" (about White treatment of Blacks) by mindlessly "following the mob" & ignoring one Basic Legal Principle of this country: "Innocent until proved guilty". Of course, there are many miscarriages of justice even in court. But to immediately declare that some people are Guilty on the basis of their White skin color without adequate evidence is a prime example of Reverse Racism (Duke case). The Gang of 88 in Durham NC has NOT publicly Repented of their Racism nor has the President of the Elite university there. Maybe just hoping this will "Blow away" like the Brawley case.

Your hope for consistency in how people treat others is quite commenable; yet it is NOT consistent with human nature and the majority of people. This is why the West puts such emphasis on the Rule of Law and the concept of individual legal equality. The Founding Fathers were quite aware of human fallibilty and therefore established a govt of Checks and Balance as well as Separation of Power, based on philoshical ideas of DWEM's(as feminists used to refer to them - Dead White European Males).

You mention that people from "my side" support the Iraq. Which "side" is that exactly? Do you know exactly what my side is? Republican? War supporter? You don't know enough about me. (Facts: I'm a registered Democrat and my voting record is Democratic).

You do have a point about US support for corrupt tyrannical govts in the ME (and elsewhere). Yet in "Realpolitiks" there were in the past valid reasons for such US support: Cold War, until 1991. Currently Pakistan and Saudi Arabia are particularly troublesome in this regard.
