Hagee, Hitler, and the Holocaust

Who won Tuesday's presidential debate?

The long knives are out for Rev. John Hagee.  The fiercely pro-Israel evangelical leader is being branded a bigot—again—but this time the media has tagged him with the worst possible association: Hitler.

Granted, Hagee himself raised the specter of Hitler in a sermon reportedly from a decade ago that was recently dredged up by a left-wing blogger, in which he said that God sent Hitler and “allowed” the Holocaust to happen “because God said my top priority for the Jewish people is to get them to come back to the land of Israel.”

Far from the ugly media-driven perception that Hagee was justifying—or even somehow praising—the Holocaust as Heaven-sent, he was actually trying to answer the question with which countless rabbis and survivors have grappled ever since: How could there be both an all-powerful God and the unimaginable horrors of the Holocaust?

While anyone could rightly be outraged at his theology or even his apparent hubris in purporting to know God’s motives, it cannot be said that he is anti-Semitic.  The charge, in fact, is completely counter to what is most beautiful about Rev. Hagee’s ministry, that it has been so dedicated to combating Christian anti-Semitism.

Context for “Hitler” sermon

Media elites have pounced on this story to help McCain’s likely general election opponent, Barack Obama, but many understandably have been startled by the “Hitler” headlines.  If the media coverage were even remotely accurate, the concern would be warranted.  But put into context, Hagee’s “Hitler” sermon is, at worst, questionable theology—that also happens to have some Jewish adherents.

In a probing and at times challenging one-on-one interview this March at a public gathering in Los Angeles, Hagee talked about how, as a young man, he was profoundly impacted by reading the book The Anguish of the Jews, by a Roman Catholic Priest named Father Edward H. Flannery.  The book chronicles over two thousand years of anti-Semitism, going back to before the time of Jesus.  It was, Hagee explained, a dark side of history to which he had not been exposed in all his theological studies.

Hagee was so haunted by the sins committed against Jews in the name of Christianity, he said, that he felt it was his calling to purge anti-Semitism from Christendom.  Untold numbers of Christians have felt called by God to do many wonderful things, but it would seem too few have had the same yearning as Hagee.  Which is precisely why Hagee has for so long has worked to rally other Christians not just to support Israel, but the Jewish people.

Hagee’s supposed anti-Catholicism

What got Hagee in hot water with the Catholic League this spring was his teachings on historical anti-Semitism.  The problem for Hagee was that he weaves those lessons with Biblical references from the Book of Revelations that have long been used by some Protestants to bash Catholics.

In the infamous YouTube video clip that helped spawn the Catholic controversy, Hagee used the Biblical term “Great Whore,” which is what those overtly anti-Catholic Protestants have labeled the Catholic Church.  Hagee, though, was citing it as the representation of the “apostate church,” which he believes is made up of all Christians who turn their backs on their faith—and he repeatedly preaches that one of the surest ways to do that is to engage in anti-Semitism.

That Hagee never actually called the Catholic Church the “Great Whore” was chalked up as meaningless, since other genuinely bigoted Protestants had used that Biblical term to smear Catholics.  While that certainly makes for a nice shortcut, it ignores Hagee’s actual record.  He is, no doubt, quite vociferous in his criticisms of the past sins committed by the Catholic Church against Jews.

Curiously overlooked by the media, however, is that he has been arguably even harsher in his condemnations of Martin Luther, the founder of Protestant Christianity whom Hagee cites as the most direct influence on Hitler.

A prominent theme in Hagee’s ministry, from his sermons to his books, is that the Holocaust was not an historical aberration, but rather merely the largest and most lethal manifestation of hatred against Jews.  So the reverend devotes what, compared to other Christian ministers, would be seen as inordinate effort to reminding his followers of the Holocaust, as well as the many other disgraceful actions perpetrated against Jews. Subject: Fishers and Hunters
In interpreting scripture, there is a method of scripture interpreting itself. The method uses the technique of interpreting a verse by the immediately previous verses in the text. Here we are referring to the verses previous to Jeremiah 16:16, which would be Jer. 16:14, & 15. Literally, it states that God is going to do something so great that the saying of old will be replaced by a new saying...instead of "these are the people G-d brought out of Egypt, they will say, these are the people G-d brought back to their land." What is His method? He sent fishers and hunters. In this context, this could refer to the varied organizations that even John Hagee is involved with (donating millions of dollars to) to bring them back to their land. It says the hunters will bring them back, not kill them.
Didn't Jesus teach us to pray by saying, Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. There is a manner of viewing God that sees him as sovereign in His kingdom. Gods kingdom is not here on earth. We are waiting for his kingdom to come. Gods will is not done on earth unless we pray it and do it and invoke it and walk in the spirit. God did not have the power to stop the Holocaust. The Church had the power to stop it and the church allowed it. That is the trajedy that John Hagee is trying to teach us recently, I see from his recent books. Not from that Jewish interpretation of evil which I don't believe is scriptural. James says let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God, for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither does he tempt any man. The children of evil got in trouble for tempting God in the wilderness and saying that He did evil. Don't say G-d did evil. Allowing it and doing it are the same thing!

Rhetoric
After reading the posts, it seems to me that some understand why God allows evil to exist and some don't get it.

The anti-religion crowd is easily duped into agreeing with the MSM that Hagee is preaching pro-Nazi hate. Those that know a bit about theology understand that Hagee was only referring to the foreknowledge of God; how all things work together to those that believe. Hagee was not endorsing the Nazi's treatment of the Jews - he was only acknowledging that God allows evil to happen for His own purposes and according to His own will.

On a related note, I notice that those whom attend religious services at least weekly vote overwhelmingly conservative which usually means Republican. Perhaps liberals own rebellion against God is blinding them to simple truths?
