The Real Illegal Alien Threat

Do you personally know a young voter who has been sucked into Obamamania?

As details emerge from the plot to kill American soldiers at Fort Dix, New Jersey, one thing is clear. The United States may have more of a homegrown terrorist problem than some people imagine.

The six defendants, whose plot was interrupted before they could do any damage, mostly grew up in the United States or had lived here for a long time. Three of the men were illegal aliens -- but it does not appear they snuck across the U.S.-Mexico border, which is where we focus most of our resources to stop illegal immigration. They came in as children, along with their parents, and over-stayed their visas -- just as one-third of all illegal aliens do.

There was plenty of warning along the way that the three illegal aliens among this group were a problem. The three brothers -- Dritan, Shain and Eljvir Duka -- were part of a much larger extended family, many of whom appear to be in the country illegally. The brothers were arrested multiple times for driving without licenses, speeding and, at least once, for possession of drug paraphernalia and marijuana. But, according to news accounts, their offenses weren't enough to trigger immigration checks.

That seems not only odd but outrageous. The Cherry Hill, N.J., police department was pretty nonchalant in explaining why a collective 19 traffic citations in less than a decade weren't enough to trigger greater scrutiny or punishment for the three: "You can't physically restrain a person from driving," a police department spokesman told the Washington Post.

Gee, I thought that's what jails were for -- restraining repeat violators from continuing to break the law. If the police had thrown the men in jail and checked their legal status, perhaps this whole plot could have been averted. I wonder whether the police would have been more diligent if the men had hailed from, say, Mexico or Guatemala, rather than Macedonia.

It is stories like this that feed anger over illegal immigration -- even though this trio is hardly representative of the 12 million illegal aliens who have come here to work over the last two decades, the overwhelming majority of whom pay taxes and don't run afoul of the law, not least because they fear being sent packing if they are caught.

The Duka brothers, however, apparently harbored no such fears. Even in the post 9/11 world when law enforcement is supposed to be more attuned to the dangers of radical Islamist groups in the U.S., this group of ne'er-do-wells managed to evade suspicion -- that is until an ordinary citizen tipped off the FBI about the contents of a jihadist tape one of the conspirators dropped off at a local electronics store to have transferred to a DVD.

Andrew McCarthy, a former special prosecutor in the 1993 World Trade Center bombing and now director for the Center for Law and Counterterrorism at the Foundation for the Defense of Democracies, noted in National Review Online recently that we should expect more Fort Dix-style jihads. But McCarthy says that this homegrown and unaffiliated variety of terrorism is nothing new.

Most of the defendants McCarthy prosecuted in 1993 belonged to no international terrorist organizations; they simply shared a dangerous ideology. That ideology, radical Islam, appears to be what motivated the New Jersey Six as well.

As McCarthy points out, "If we want to understand why we are at risk from cells in places like Cherry Hill, which have no ties to foreign groups, and if we want to learn what authentic, moderate Muslim reformers are up against, we need to open our eyes to what motivates jihadists. It is powerful, enduring and frightening because it is a doctrine, not an organization."

I would add that if we wanted to crack down on the illegal aliens who are the greatest threat to us, we'd devote more resources to rounding up wannabe terrorists than busboys and gardeners.

Subject: The REAL Illegal Threat?
I read your article for May 11. Your bias for illegal aliens from Mexico is disappointing. I have seen you on Fox News, and it seems you let all common sense go out the window when you write or speak about them. I live where this problem is HUGE. Many illegal aliens do NOT pay taxes because they work under the table. They drain our resources, trash the countryside and leave it all for others to clean up, commit horrible crimes, have nearly bankrupted our hospitals, and display great disrespect for our country.

For over a year, in a field only about 20 yards from my house, we saw huge bags of garbage, backpacks, water bottles, food packages, plastic bags, piles of clothing, etc., piling up weekly. Drugs, legal and illegal, were left in abandoned backpacks where school children could find them. Homes were broken into. It wasn’t until the Minutemen pulled into the area in 2005 that this began to ease off in our neighborhood. Car thefts, high speed chases and shoot-outs between rival alien drug dealers on major interstate highways, and endless other problems, have shown me over time that your glowing view of these people is not based on personal experience.

Perhaps you think we should hand unearned citizenship to these people on a silver platter, but you are wrong about that. There are plenty of Mexican terrorists roaming around here (MS 13 and other gangs come to mind) as well as other criminals, and they certainly do NOT pay taxes or help our economy. Worse, we have lost our freedom to enjoy the beautiful lands surrounding our city. It is wiser to forego outdoor recreation in more isolated areas around here, something that used to be safe, fun, and normal to do, because you could be robbed, carjacked, raped, or murdered.

We have a path to citizenship that helps ensure assimilation and prosperity, as well as good health, for all who follow it correctly. We have over 12 million people who have NOT followed it correctly, and just because they WANT it doesn't mean they should have it. It is especially interesting to me that the Mexicans I know who have immigrated legally and gone through the long and arduous process of becoming earned citizens heartily agree with my view and are horrified by what they are seeing. And they make remarkably loyal, productive, CONTRIBUTING citizens.

A person would have to be deaf, dumb, and blind not to notice the disrespectful protests, the problems, and the costs these "good" lawbreakers have created. Sorry, Linda. The benefits are far outweighed by the costs and grief. Too often, these people are far more loyal to Mexico than to America, and they insist on carrying many of the negatives of that culture with them, recreating them here. I am not sure if you have ever really gone into Mexico and spent much time in that culture. If you have, I cannot imagine you wanting to see that become our culture, here.

The United States of America is not a huge social welfare agency. We all have to pull our weight or the whole thing goes under. Those people need to go home and pressure their own government to do the right thing. It is wrong for the government of Mexico to make the demands of us that they do, and to drive their own problems north.

Just try to protest with an American flag in Mexico. Try to immigrate illegally there. Try to do ANY of the things there these people do here. Down there, the government and law enforcers do the right thing. They land your behind in jail, for a very long time. They don't tolerate that nonsense, and neither should we. And PS - they do not just hand out citizenship to ANYONE, EVER. Mexican citizenship is heavily protected, and rarely shared, by that government.

Arab terrorists are only ONE of our Real Illegal Threats. Illegal aliens from Mexico are definitely real illegal threats, as well. I understand your protective stance regarding these people, but I just know too, too many people who are faced with the TRUTH daily as to what this is really about, and there isn’t enough spin in the world to convince them otherwise.

You’ll never convince me. I live it. Down on the Border, where the action is and the truth cannot be concealed

Does anyone know...
...which 8 states MS13 is NOT operating in? I'm considering a move...
