Who won Tuesday's presidential debate?

Nobody ever tried to build a house by starting with the roof and working down -- it can’t be done. You have to start from the bottom up.

The same thing is true about building a political party. You have to start at the grass roots and work your way up to the national level, going from precincts, to counties, to states and all the way up to the national level. Without a large body of workers at the local level, a political party would be like an army with only generals and no privates.

This is just plain common sense, but it seems to have escaped the notice of the Republican Party, a vast organization with lots of generals and colonels and damned few privates. Nobody has focused on building the Republican Party since Ronald Reagan took on the job. My dad won the presidency because he worked to build the party from the ground up from 1976 to 1980.

He went out there and he supported local congressional and senatorial candidates, and many other Republicans at the local and state level. Electing them required an army of workers at the grass roots, and through his efforts in many states where the Republican Party had been all but absent at the local level the party now had a grassroots organization capable of spreading the GOP gospel and getting out the vote on Election Day.

As a result, when he decided to make a second try at winning the White House in 1980, he had a huge core group of supporters in place at the grass roots ready to help him.

The point is my dad went out and did the hard work required to build a winning organization, which became such a key part of the Reagan revolution because it was at the level where the majority of Americans live.

Today -- especially after the debacle of 2006 when the Democrats took control of both houses of Congress -- the GOP is in shambles. The great coalition my dad built is history, and in vast areas of the country the GOP exists at the local level in name only.

Ask yourself just how many of the current crop of Republican presidential candidates have spent the last four, six or eight years working out there in the states helping to elect Republican congressional candidates and local and state officials and in the process helping to rebuild the at the grass roots? Mitt Romney’s VC Firm to Buy Clear Channel
Posted by Chris Brunner at December 14, 2007 10:25 AM

What would it cost to buy the support of just about every nationally syndicated neocon talk show host in America? About $19.5 billion, which is what Mitt Romney’s private equity firm, Bain Capital, and Thomas H. Lee Partners have agreed to pay in a leveraged buyout agreement with Clear Channel Communications, the largest radio station owner in the country. This is part of a negotiation that has been pending for over a year.

Clear Channel owns more than 1,100 full-power AM, FM, and shortwave radio stations, twelve radio channels on XM Satellite Radio, and more than 30 television stations in the United States. Premiere Radio Networks, which is the largest syndication company in the United States, is a wholly owned subsidiary of Clear Channel and is home to Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck, and many others. Sean Hannity recently signed a large multi-market contract with Clear Channel, as well.

From an anonymous email:

"I’ll bet those hosts won’t reveal that conflict of interest, but it’s worth noting when you hear them begin hyping Romney, which has already begun. A lot of GOP supporters will support whomever they are told to support, so be prepared for a big push for Romney. On the bright side, Romney has more vulnerabilities than Rudy, based on his record. Look at this as the GOP establishment doing us a favor. Rich men can bankroll their own campaigns (a la John Kerry), but it takes a special breed to use investors’ money to buy entire networks that can operate as passive wings of a presidential campaign."

It should be noted that Mitt Romney, while no longer the CEO, remains a silent partner of Bain Capital.

Mr Reagan
Very good article. After reading a the posts of the many conservative folks here and the "replys" made by lib wing nuts, it shows that we conservatives are more willing to do something about our elected representatives when they fail to do what we elected them to do. The libs just keep re-electing the same idiots over and over again even though they do nothing for the country.

As an example I will use my own experience. I moved to my current state of residence in 1997. I contacted my Senators and Congressman on numerous issues. Fortunately my Congressman was in touch with what I and the rest of his constituency wanted done and followed through. He was also very good about replying to our letters and e-mails to explain his position on the issues.
My Senators on the other hand, very seldom have responded to any letters or e-mails. They consistently voted opposite of the way I and the rest of their base desired they vote. Apparently they thought they knew better or sold their votes for future considerations on other issues. Well, in 2006 one of my Senators came up for re-election and he is no longer in office. I'm sure the rest of his constituency were like me and could not in good conscience cast another vote for him, when he refused to listen to us.
Although I didn't vote for him, I could not cast a vote for his dim competitor either so our local lib wing nuts should not be saying that they were given a mandate because they weren't. When our new Senator comes up for re-election, he may be a one termer because his views are opposite of most in this area and we are just waiting for a chance to elect someone who will do what he is elected to do.
