John McCain and the Conservative Base appear to be irrevocably divided. But delve into the several hundreds of comments to GOP onDemand (and this column) the solution for this schism is more obvious than people think. (Parenthetically, the unveiling of GOP onDemand on Townhall.com was more than successful, it was phenomenal. We were expecting about 30 or so onsite "hits." To date, we have over 8,000 and still counting. The Liberals, Democrats and the press must now understand that MoveOn must now move over).
First, understand that we, the Trustees of the Republican Leadership Trust, are just that — trustees. We are required, by law, to be 100% impartial. We don’t sides. Otherwise, the Orphans Court judges of the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas will be quite upset with us.
Second, understand we were launched by one of the most conservative donors in the nation. Utterly frustrated with RNC’s failure to provide precinct Republican committee people the necessary grassroots support for Senator Rick Santorum (R-PA) in 2006, this national conservative leader gave us seed money (and even named the Trust) to make sure that conservatives wouldn’t again suffer losses because of the lack of grassroots support as did Santorum.
Now to the point. Disagreements between people are broken down into "Technical" and "Adaptive" issues. As stated in my forthcoming book, Government Ethics, Accountability and Productivity, "a technical issue is that which the resources (money, manpower, capital) are easily identifiable and the sole question is ascertaining how to marshal or obtain the resources required to resolve the conflict. An adaptive issue, on the other hand, is a subjective response to the conflict, and is the result of the competing value judgments the stakeholders bring to the table. Settling the adaptive issues to [resolve the conflict] requires the leadership to marshal the stakeholders' common value judgments versus the competing value judgments that are dividing the stakeholders."
Obviously, getting the sides to talk is easier said than done. But here, John McCain and the RNC leadership want the Conservative Base back into the fold, because they told me. And through your comments, most of you also want to unite.
And how do we know it? By how you are saying what you are saying. Out of the thousands of GOP onDemand comments, almost all of you are urging the Republican Party to return to its roots, come back to its base, stop acting as Democrat Lite. And that’s where the solution lies. The real problem is your justified belief that many Inside-the-Beltway Republicans violated your trust, they broke the faith. They said that they were going to cut Federal spending, but didn’t. They said that they were going to shrink the Federal government, but didn’t. They said they were going to conduct themselves ethically, but didn’t. They said they were going to listen, but didn’t.
RNC believes the Conservative Base is already uniting behind McCain. And they cite polling data to back them up. At the same time Robert Novak writes in his May 14, 2008 Evans-Novak Political Report that the "claims that McCain has a united Republican Party behind him are greatly exaggerated. We find considerable opposition on the right . . . The biggest problem is that he does not realize he has a problem."
But the bottom line is this: half a loaf is better than none at all. After what the California Supreme Court did this past week, do you really want an Obama presidency with a veto-proof Democratic Congress appointing judges who will jam same-sex marriage down your throat? Is this what you want?
The reason why our benefactor established the Republican Leadership Trust was to promote Republican unity by providing everyone a meaningful opportunity to be involved — giving everyone a voice that is heard. So, here’s what we are going to do. Go to www.GOPonDemand.com. Click the GRIPE page and specifically elaborate on these two points: Continued... |
