The Mainstream Media: American Democracy’s Greatest Threat

The opinions expressed by columnists are their own and do not necessarily represent the views of Townhall.com.

In recent years, we’ve witnessed how the Left is seeking to destroy our country. This includes allowing millions of illegals to flood our borders and giving them free hotel rooms, food, healthcare, and 10-year court dates. Meanwhile, while the press belittles or ignores such issues.

Cheers and Jeers

The left cheers when the inept Biden administration abandons American citizens and billions in military equipment in Afghanistan, and the press doesn’t call for anyone to be terminated in the U.S. military or the Department of Defense.

When the Biden crime family has more than 211 banking irregularities and nine family members have received significant funds from foreign governments, the Leftist mainstream press will say that this is all conjecture and that there's no proof.

When the Durham report reveals that the FBI conspired with Hillary Clinton and her campaign to create a false narrative about Donald Trump colluding with Russia and that the CIA, the Obama administration, and many high-ranking government officials knew about it as early as 2016, the press ignores it or calls it a big nothing burger.

The American Press is Our Greatest Enemy

A free and reasonably impartial press was a key element in establishing our representative republic. The Founding Fathers knew it, Americans from all walks of life knew it, and for most of our history, we took it for granted. Sure, human beings are biased, and organizations have particular slants, but generally journalism and reporting were based on the underlying notion that the news organizations did their best to portray what was actually happening.

Today, we know that among the mainstream media giants, from The New York Times and The Washington Post on down, no plan is in the works for offering a fair and balanced accounting of national and international events.

As such, our highly compromised press is the single biggest obstacle to moving forward as a nation. In league with the Democratic National Committee, there is virtually no chance of objective political reporting. As Professor Victor Davis Hanson pointed out, The New York Times built its reputation over more than 150 years, as did The Washington Post. Their publishers today are rapidly eroding these reputations.

Flouting their Aims

The Leftists who run these organizations today and the propagandist-type of journalists that they hire continually espouse far-left positions. They have no intention of attempting objective journalism and, indeed, openly flout their highly biased positions.

Their features and stories are fabricated in a manner that would amaze even their staunchest liberal founders.

Without a reasonably unbiased press and any attempts to offer articles that have some semblance of fairness, our culture has little to no chance of proceeding in a manner that will be of benefit to all. As the Democrats will one day learn, it won't even be of benefit to them.

When proponents on the Left and the Right have little to no chance of compromise, finding common ground, or abandoning partisan politics for the common good, what chance does the country have? When our media is completely dominated by a singular point of view, which praises anyone with whom they agree, and besmirches anyone with whom they disagree, how can anything but dissension follow?
