Poll
Who won Tuesday's presidential debate?

America's sky is falling. A Los Angeles Times/Bloomberg poll conducted last month found that 78 percent of Americans think that the country is heading in the wrong direction.

Of course almost 4 in 5 Americans think the country is heading to heck in a hand basket. The news media are stuck in one gear when it comes to reporting economic news -- Armageddon.

As Hillary Rodham Clinton supporters so aptly noted, many journalists are besotted with Barack Obama. That makes them open to any bad news that can be tacked onto Republican George W. Bush.

But it's more than liberal bias. Journalists are convinced that the American economy is collapsing and going down the tube because our industry is collapsing and going down the tube.

So if you say the economy is "slowing," as Republican presidential candidate John McCain has said, you're insensitive. If you are in touch, you are supposed to ignore the .6 percent GDP growth in the fourth quarter of 2007 and 1 percent growth in the first quarter of 2008 because that belies the belief that the U.S. economy is in recession.

Remember the "misery index" -- the combined rate of unemployment and inflation that peaked at 22 percent under President Jimmy Carter? Forget it. Not enough misery. In 2004, Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry had to throw in extra statistics to inflate the Bush misery index because the combined unemployment and inflation rate was about 8 percent.

Lately, news stories report on American fears about inflation, without reporting the rate of inflation. It's about 4.2 percent. With the unemployment rate at 5.5 percent, the "misery index" is around 10 percent.

Yes, gasoline prices are up.

Granted, higher prices at the pump are forcing some Americans to cut back and have had a ripple effect throughout the economy. After years of arguing that greener energy policies don't hurt the economy, but instead create jobs, Democrats and talking heads should be cooing about the new economic horizons unfolding. Subject: Slacker
"Ignore those forest fires...and floods..." The forest fires and floods are happening in locations where there have ALWAYS been forest fires and floods, at the time of year when they have ALWAYS happened. The Indian name for the LA basin was "The Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes." The ecology of that area DEPENDS on forest fires to keep it green and growing...not to mention that the fires are exacerbated by the Greenies' shrieking of "NO CUTTING DOWN BRUSH!" policy.

So the weather signs you point to are Situation Normal, business as usual.

And as far as your having to pay market price for what you buy, boo hoo. I don't suppose a guy with the name "Slacker" was lined up all night to get the new iPhone and pay $100 per month to keep his new Pocket Pet purring? Maybe if you cut out the Binkie Maintenance Fees you could afford gas? How about cutting out the beer, the Starbucks and the whacky tobaccy?

Oh, I see. You want everything you want, the nanosecond you want it; you want it to cost what you feel like paying, and you want other people to pay even that?

Well, as Patsy Kline and my Southern Granny would say, "The people in Hell want ice water, and they're not going to get it either."

Now get a haircut, take a bath, pack a lunch and get to work.

There is no dispute that soaring health care costs, the increasing demand for fuel, illegal immigration (which the article does not address) and the increased price in fuel are problems. The issue is what to do about them. It simply is not productive or truthful to complicate and falsely state that we are in a recession or to present an unemployment doom and gloom when the facts are otherwise. The false picture is being painted to give a false answer to the problem: more government control. With health care, the soaring costs are due largely to the fact that there is no incentive for the user and provider to keep costs down. If we want to have high quality care (and not to resort to rationing or delays in care) then we need to use the market to provide competition to keep the costs down and give incentives for preventive care. A large amount of the costs is due to people not taking care of themselves. This drives up the costs for everyone. With respect to immigration, yes we need to control the borders and this is a very important issue. However, the truth is that this administration has been agressive and successful in containing the Islamic Fundamentalists and they have prevented attacks in the US. To say that the terrorists (who mark the US as the #1 target) just don't want to attack us is disingenuous. They have successfully attacked the UK, Spain and elsewhere. They have not attacked us because the present administration kept them from doing so. Attacking Al Qaeda has been its #1 priority and it has contained thousands of them.
