Winton leads Delaware State over Bethune-Cookman

Why did Republicans lose in the 2008 elections?



Vashon Winton ran for two touchdowns and passed for another to lead Delaware State to a 26-20 win over Bethune-Cookman on Saturday.

Winton scored on 10-yard runs in the first and second quarters along with a 17-yard passing score to Erik Jones in the second as the Hornets (2-3, 2-1 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) stopped a three-game losing streak.

Winton rushed for 102 yards on 16 carries and passed for 147 yards for the Hornets, while Chris Strother led with 110 yards on 11 carries.

Delaware State scored on the game's first possession with Riley Flickinger's 27-yard field goal. Then Ryan Davis recovered a bad snap by the Hornets punter in the end zone for a touchdown for the Wildcats (4-2, 2-2).

Matt McCutcheon's ensuing PAT at 8:10 of the first period gave the Wildcats a 7-3 lead.

Winton completed a 70-yard drive in eight plays, crossing from the final ten yards at 5:07 of the first period, giving DSU a 10-7 edge.

McCutcheon's 31-yard field goal with 49 seconds left in the first quarter squared the score at 10-all. But Flickinger connected on a 20-yard field goal with 12:51 to left in the second period for a 13-10 Delaware State advantage.

The Hornets scored twice more in the second quarter to go up by 26-10. Winton's second 10-yard run produced a TD at 9:31 before halftime. Then Jones caught the 17-yard scoring pass from Winton with 52 seconds remaining in the first half.

McCutcheon kicked a 25-yard field goal on the last play of the first half, leaving Delaward State with a 26-13 halftime lead.

After a scoreless third period, Bethune-Cookman added a score with 2:24 left in the game when Jeff Pope caught a 43-yard TD pass from Matthew Johnson. That made it 26-20, but the Wildcats never regained possession of the ball.
